JoomlaWorks Blog

JoomlaWorks is developing and supporting some of the most respected and popular extensions in the Joomla! community, including the groundbreaking K2, AllVideos, Simple Image Gallery and Frontpage Slideshow. Since 2006 we have developed more than 26 extensions for the Joomla! CMS, all of which have been used in hundreds of thousands of Joomla! sites across the world. Late 2010, our extensions had been downloaded more that 4 million times, out of which AllVideos and Simple Image Gallery had more than 1.5 million downloads each and K2 more than 350,000! Innovation and the open source philosophy are the two things that motivate us!

  2. SocialConnect v1.9.0 released

SocialConnect v1.9.0 has just been released. It mainly improves compatibility with Twitter and LinkedIn API updates (either already in force or soon to be enforced).

Here's what's been added or changed in SocialConnect with the release of v1.9.0:

    • Updated for recent Twitter API changes that relate to login in SocialConnect. Twitter now requires URLs without parameters to use as callbacks when verifying login information. This means that you can either create a menu item pointing to the SocialConnect login form (e.g. https://domain.tld/socialconnect) and then use https://domain.tld/socialconnect/login/twitteroauth (basically your SocialConnect URL + "/login/twitteroauth") as the callback URL under "App Details" on Twitter OR you can use the menu-less SEF URL which is https://domain.tld/component/socialconnect/login/twitteroauth.
    • Updated for recent LinkedIn API changes (namely API v2). Existing LinkedIn apps using v1 of their API will work for some time to come, but new apps registered will only utilize v2 of their API and this release makes sure everything works as expected. The callback URL for logins should also bewithout parameters (although not explicitly forbidden for now by LinkedIn) as in the case of Twitter. So use something like https://domain.tld/socialconnect/login/linkedinoauth if you have a menu pointing to the SocialConnect login form with "socialconnect" as the menu item alias OR you can just use the menu-less SEF URL which is https://domain.tld/component/socialconnect/login/linkedinoauth.
    • Added 2 new options under "Advanced Settings" ("Enforce HTTPS" & "Enforce absolute URL when posting to social") which address edge cases where social login failed (namely in sites behind CloudFlare that utilize "Flexible SSL") or auto posting failed (shared URL was relative instead of absolute).
    • Added update notification in SocialConnect's dashboard (a missing feature for Joomla 1.5 based sites).
    • Improvements in the backend component's UI.
    • Various dependency updates.

If you are using Joomla v3.8+ we highly recommend you update to this newest version for better compatibility.

  3. RadioWave v1.1.0 released

RadioWave v1.1.0 has just been released. This is a bugfix and feature-improvement release.

Here's what's been added or changed in RadioWave with the release of v1.1.0:

    • Lots of K2 related fixes/improvements: use the new K2 modal introduced in v2.9.0, remove Google+ sharing (to be deprecated), proper checks for HTTPS in user profile URLs, added new item.php override for the "schedule" category (example layout), removed itemform.php overrides.
    • Fixed DST time changes in the schedule overrides for K2 Content
    • New (more complete) sample data used for the K2-based radio schedule & on-air modules (using K2 Content). The QuickStart package has been updated with the latest changes and the changes are visible on the RadioWave demo site already.
    • Updated all Radiojar references to utilize HTTPS.
    • Updated the code on all tabs used in module and component overrides.
    • Added versioning to CSS and JS files so changes in these files are instantly visible on the web. Additionally, by utilizing the "nocache" URL parameters, you can enforce a timestamp on the template's CSS/JS files, which can be pretty handy when working behind CDNs or caching proxies. Just append ?nocache=1 (2, 3 and so on, as long as the string changes) when you want to force-load a fresh copy of your CSS/JS changes.
    • Fixed long void between the last (right) sidebar module and the site's footer when viewing the site on mobile.
    • Added support for more fields to be created for the schedule (previously you named extra fields with a suffix ranging from _a to _l, it's now _a to _z)
    • Reformat mixed HTML/PHP on all template files so it's easier to edit them.
    • Checked for PHP 7.3 & Joomla 3.9.x compatibility.
    • Removed Alexa verification field (deprecated service) and jQuery version selector (previously applicable in Joomla 2.5).
    • Lots of other minor fixes/improvements overall.
    • The demo site now comes with caching set to use the "file" driver and gzip disabled for maximum compatibility with hosting providers.

If you are using Joomla v3.8+ and K2 v2.8.0+ we highly recommend you update to this newest version.

  4. Simple Image Gallery Pro v3.6.5 released

Simple Image Gallery Pro v3.6.5 has just been released. This is a feature-improvement release.

Here's what's been added or changed in Simple Image Gallery Pro with the release of v3.6.5:

    • Added a new "File size limit per uploaded image" option in the component's settings so you can enforce a limit to each image being inserted in the gallery upload widget. For example, if you set "File size limit per uploaded image" to 500kb and some user inserts 6 images with 2 of them larger than the 500kb limit, the user will be alerted twice and the remaining 4 images will be inserted and ready to be uploaded.
    • Improved the Polaroids gallery layout to adapt better to responsive designs.

If you are using Joomla v3.8.8+ and K2 v2.9.0+ we highly recommend you update to this newest version for better compatibility.

  5. New milestone for K2 translations & an important message to the translation teams!

Wow! K2 translations have reached a new milestone! There are now 89 active language teams (out of 114 in total) with 849 active translators (out of 964 registered). As we are nearing the launch of K2 v2.10, translation teams have also started wrapping up incoming changes to the K2 language files and we are seeing increased activity across the board. So a big thank you to all K2 translators for their hard work!

This is obviously an incredible milestone for K2 (as it's probably the most translated Joomla project - heck, it even has more language teams than Joomla's 75!), especially now that the project is nearing 10 years of life!

A message to the K2 translators

We recently had reports from K2 users in the forum that some language packs failed to work as expected. Initially we thought it was a zip packaging issue between Transifex and getk2.org but since any such issues were known to be corrected on Transifex's side (availability issues primarily), eventually we found what the actual problem was, which also explained why some language strings would appear translated while others didn't.

The problem is that some language packs, especially the oldest ones and as such the most popular ones, continued to use the "_QQ_" identifier as a way to insert double quotes in translated strings. This identifier was introduced way back in Joomla 1.6 as a weird way of having double quotes within translated strings (don't ask...), however it was removed with the release of Joomla 3.9 and as such causes language files that still reference this identifier to not load at all.

So I kindly ask all K2 translators that they review their translations for this identifier and replace any "_QQ_" and \\"_QQ_" instances with either a single quote (') or an escaped double quote (\"). The single quote option is obviously the easiest and cleanest to be honest.

A related announcement has already been sent through Transifex to all contributors as well.

The K2 team is preparing for version 2.10 to be launched within February and there are already some minor fixes/cleanups and improvements compared to v2.9.0. The plan is to go from v2.10 to v2.11 (tops) and then switch to v3.0 with a revamped codebase that is based on the Joomla v3.x (and the upcoming v4) API, with any legacy code entirely removed and -most importantly- the language files consolidated to just 2 files: one for the frontend and one for the backend. This will also make managing the translations a lot easier on the long term.

If you have any feedback or comments, feel free to reply back or (even better) post to the K2 forum at: https://www.joomlaworks.net/forum/k2
